What is PRINCE2®?

PRINCE2® is a written description of how to manage a project in a logical, organised way, following defined steps. It is not a tool or a technique but a structured project management process. That is why it is an easily tailored and scalable method that can be applied to all varieties of projects and situations.

Owned by the UK Cabinet Office PRINCE2 is a de facto standard developed and used extensively by the UK government and is widely recognized and used in the private sector, both in the UK and internationally. It embodies established and proven best practice in project management.

PRINCE2, Projects in Controlled Environments, is a widely used project management method, which navigates you through all the essentials for running a successful project.

PRINCE2 has been taken on by both the public and private sectors. PRINCE2 is a flexible method and although originally designed for the management of IT projects it is now aimed at all other types of project. PRINCE2 is driven by user based improvements, project management specialists and a review panel of 150 public and private sector organisations. This end result is a generic best practice tool which is flexible enough to be tailored to your organisation and used successfully for all types of projects.

As PRINCE2 is a very successful project management qualification, a large number of people and organisations have used and implemented PRINCE2. The PRINCE2 series consists of a range of linked publications covering everything from business benefits to people issues. Along with all other OGC guidance, they share a common vocabulary and way of approaching projects.

There are two PRINCE2 qualification levels: PRINCE2 Foundation and PRINCE2 Practitioner.

  • PRINCE2 Foundation level is for those with a requirement to learn the basics and terminology of PRINCE2.
  • PRINCE2 Practitioner is the highest level qualification and is suitable for those with the need to manage projects within a PRINCE2 environment.
